FIJI MEDICAL CONFERENCE 24-26 SEPT 2009

A conjoint medical conference in Fiji will be held with the Gold Coast medical Association, the General Practice Gold Coast, the Fiji College of
GPs, the Fiji Medical Association, the Fiji School of Medicine and both Griffith and Bond Universities from the Gold Coast.

                                                 


This meeting will be held at the Radisson Resort in Denerau only 20 minutes from Nadi International Airport.

This meeting will be a great opportunity for attendees to be informed on clinical topics and to make a contribution to furthering links between the professionals on the Gold Coast and Fiji.

The conference will have academic and practical clinical streams.
Topics to be covered include:
1. Diabetes - this is a significant problem for Fiji and a comprehensive conference stream on this topic will be provided;

2. For the perspective of General Practice, a workshop on "office surgical procedures" will be provided;

3. Cardiological topics to be covered include - risk factor management in cardiovascular diseases, investigation of the patient with dyspnea, assessment, investigation and management of heart failure, hypertension - its evaluation and treatment, an ECG workshop - interpreting the ECG, the epidemic of atrial fibrillation, the approach to the patient with valvular heart disease;

4. There will be a stream on neurosciences - neurology, neurosurgery, and psychiatry;

5. A stream on arthritis and musculoskeletal conditions, and

6. A stream on eye diseases, among others.

So far around 30 speakers have expressed interest in attending and at this early stage there are 11 definite confirmations (see table below)

*If you have never been to Denarau you are in for a very pleasant surprise, apart from being only 20 minutes from the Nadi International Airport and less than that from the township of Nadi, it is a self contained development that makes Sanctuary Cove pale into comparison & there is a free bus you can hop on and visit any of the other hotels for a drink or a meal (there are 22 class restaurants on Denerau), or the new port retail complex with its restaurants & shops including a New Zealand Ice Cream shop and a Hard Rock Cafe for the young or young at heart.

Is owned by the same interests that own cybermarket.com.au Pty ltd, the major shareholder is Gerry Sinclair whose great grandfather from Edinburgh first came to Australia, and then also went to Fiji prior to cession in 1874 to run cattle.
Gerry was educated at Suva Grammar and saw the start of the Fijian Tourist Industry before finishing his education at Newington College, Sydney University & University of NSW in Sydney, and has now been in Australia for just under 50 years, but has made frequent trips back to Fiji for holidays.
Gerry is also co manager of a world wide group called Kai Viti Friends and took 100 of their members to Fiji in 2007 for the 75th Anniversary of the Royal Suva Yacht Club, and to be addressed by the Interim Prime Minister on his vision for Fiji.
He will be taking a similar number on a tailored cruise in 2009.
Both events organised on the ground by ATS Pacific under the watchful eye of Max storck.
Apart from a business alliance Gerry & his family and Max & his family are lifelong friends, and Gerry also plans to be in Denerau during the GCMA -Fiji Medical Association next year, so we are not leaving anything to chance to make sure your first conference in Fiji is a resounding success.
